According to the Office of Women’s Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men are affected by a vein disorder. Surprisingly, half of people over age 50 will develop varicose veins in their lifetime.

What are varicose veins? This disorder is the result of weakened vein valves that cause blood to flow backwards and pool in the lower extremities. When this occurs, it can cause leg pain and discomfort. This pooling of blood is what causes veins to become enlarged and visible through the skin, once this happens, these veins are called varicose veins.

There are several factors that can lead to varicose veins, including age and weight, but listed below are other risk factors that can contribute to the development of venous disease.

1. Family History

Similar to other medical issues, genetics put many people at risk for vein disease. For instance, if your mother, aunts and grandmother all developed varicose veins after age 50, you could suddenly experience the same symptoms at, or around, that age.

2. Prolonged Sitting or Standing

Did you know your job could lead to the formation of unsightly varicose veins? When you sit at a desk for eight hours without getting up frequently, circulation weakens and your veins must work harder to pump blood. On the other hand, if you’re a manual laborer on his or her feet all day, the risk for varicose veins also increases as a result of more pressure put on your veins.

3. Pregnancy

About 15 percent of women develop varicose veins during or after pregnancy. You’re more likely to see them form if you’re already a likely candidate for the disease, however, an individual without risk factors can also develop vein disease due to the added pressure in the veins during pregnancy. Sometimes, after birth and when hormones return to stable levels, varicose veins may disappear.
