Rosacea is a common chronic skin condition that makes the face, neck and chest red. Some people may misinterpret rosacea for blushing, overheating or sunburn, but it is really a collection of visible blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. The condition can progressively worsen until the face appears red all the time.
Symptoms of Rosacea
Rosacea mostly affects women and men with fair skin. Often, rosacea is found in women ages 30 and older. It can present as a form of adult acne, but the following symptoms indicate you could be suffering from a more serious skin condition:
- Frequent skin flushing
- Constant redness
- Red bumps on the face
- Skin reddening around the eyes
- An enlarged red nose (more common in men)
Rosacea Treatment & Prevention
Some topical medications and antibiotics can help manage rosacea symptoms, but there is no definitive cure for this skin condition. When left untreated, rosacea gets worse, so be sure to follow these tips to keep the redness from progressing:
-
- Wear sunscreen and limit exposure when the sun is the strongest (10am – 2pm)
- Avoid “rosacea triggers” that make the skin’s appearance worse
- Stress, spicy foods, hot temperatures and alcohol to name a few
- Use only the best skin care products to reduce visible redness

Although microdermabrasion is not a universal treatment of all skin conditions, it can be helpful in patients who have mild rosacea mixed with acne or sun damage. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating procedure that thoroughly cleans and polishes the skin. Please check with your doctor before seeking this aesthetic treatment for rosacea.
