mature womanDid you know more than 15 million cosmetic procedures are performed in the US each year? If you’re unhappy with your appearance, you may be considering injectable fillers like Juvederm® or a facelift to regain your confidence and restore youthfulness.

These procedures are becoming increasingly popular and results continue to look even more natural. Not sure which method is right for your goals? Learn more about the differences between facelifts and fillers.

1. Procedure

A facelift or “rhytidectomy” requires invasive surgery to achieve a younger appearance. The process involves tightening loose skin to help reduce wrinkles, sagging and creases. While there are many different types of facelift procedures, they all require facial incisions.

Fillers smooth fine lines and wrinkles, while naturally contouring your face. They are injected to add volume and replenish your skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, which helps keep the skin pliable.

2. Cost

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a facelift is around $8,000 – not including anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses. With injectable fillers, you pay per syringe. In most cases, you will need multiple syringes to achieve your desired results. While price varies by product, the average cost of a hyaluronic acid syringe is $700.

3. Recovery Time

For an invasive surgical procedure, you can expect post-facelift recovery time to be about two to three weeks or longer, depending on how much work was done. During this time, you may experience some bruising and swelling, but often little pain.

The average recovery time for fillers is about one to two days with very little downtime necessary. While you may notice a difference right away, it may take as many as two weeks to see the full results. During recovery, you may notice a little soreness and mild bruising.

4. Maintenance

Once recovered from your facelift, follow-up maintenance is not required and results can last up to 10 years! However, it’s common for patients to get touch-ups or focus on a new target area with injectable treatments.

Fillers require more frequent maintenance, usually once or twice a year. While these touch-ups cost money, they offer more flexibility than “permanent” procedures. You can alter the number of syringes and focus on different target areas, based on your current goals.
