If you’re suffering from the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins, a range of options are available to treat this medical condition. Ambulatory phlebectomy is one minimally invasive procedure that involves making a tiny pin-point puncture with a small needle over the areas of varicose veins. We then gently lift the varicose vein through this tiny puncture and it is removed, allowing the tissue to recover faster compared to other techniques.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is typically recommended for patients with prominent, bulging or swollen veins who are experiencing physical side effects, including leg pain, swelling, itching, restlessness or heaviness. Those with chronic venous insufficiency – when blood cannot flow back up to the heart due to damaged vein valves – may also be steered toward this procedure.
As you evaluate treatment options, learn what to expect from ambulatory phlebectomy.
What Is Ambulatory Phlebectomy?
During this outpatient procedure, malfunctioning veins are removed with a microscopic incision to provide relief from varicose vein symptoms. The incisions are small enough that no sutures are needed.
How Ambulatory Phlebectomy Works
The in-office procedure starts with local anesthetic to numb the area. A series of 2-3 millimeter incisions are then made along the affected vein and a small tool used to pull them out.
Vein Treatment Recovery
After the procedure, patients are encouraged to walk and can resume their daily routine. They may return to more strenuous exercise the following week.
Who’s a Candidate for Ambulatory Phlebectomy?
Ambulatory phlebectomy addresses larger, bulging varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.
This procedure can also lessen the physical symptoms of varicose veins, including:
- Leg heaviness and fatigue
- Swelling
- Leg cramping
- Skin irritation surrounding the veins
- Skin discoloration
- Venous ulcers
