Summer is the season for beach days, picnics in the park and family travel. If you suffer from varicose veins, these activities may not always be easy to enjoy. You might feel the need to decline an invite or cover up your legs, so no one sees your varicose veins.

At the Vein Centers of Connecticut, we want you to look and feel your best! The first step is to schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your vein health and develop a treatment plan.

What else can you do to make the most of summer?

Tips to Relieve Pressure

The summer months are a popular time to travel, whether by plane, train or car. If you’ll be stuck in a seated position for several hours, have a plan to keep up your circulation:

  • For road trips, schedule breaks to get out of the car, stretch and walk around
  • On a plane, make sure you have enough leg room to stretch out
  • While seated, contract your muscles with small exercises like calf flexes

Also, dress to ease your symptoms. We recommend wearing compression stockings, especially for lengthy trips.

Low Intensity Activities

When you’re covered up in the summer heat, you likely won’t want to run a marathon or climb a mountain. Stick with low-impact exercises that keep you active. Walking, bike riding and swimming are three low intensity activities that promote good circulation without intensifying varicose veins symptoms. Also remember to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade.
