Topicals can help but they work on the surface. To treat skin concerns at the source, many providers now recommend Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, a noninvasive, light-based therapy designed to target dark spots, calm redness and refine overall tone.
Over a series of treatment sessions, IPL can visibly reduce redness, address hyperpigmentation, control acne-causing bacteria and smooth rough skin texture with little to no downtime.

What Is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?
IPL is a non-surgical, light-based treatment designed to address multiple skin concerns that hinder a vibrant, radiant complexion. It delivers brief, targeted pulses of light filtered to target pigment and blood vessels while minimizing impact to surrounding skin. IPL is often gentler than other laser therapies with less recovery time.
Many patients notice smoother texture, less redness, fewer flare-ups and lighter age spots after a series of treatment, with some improvement visible after the first session.
Common treatment areas for IPL include the face, neck and chest. After a cooling gel is applied, sessions usually take about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the area.
Why Do Patients Choose IPL?
- Addresses multiple skin concerns in the same session
- Broad-spectrum light for flexible targeting
- Little to no downtime; resume normal activities same day
- Improvements become apparent as temporary redness subsides
Who Might Not Be a Candidate for IPL:
- Recent tanning – sun, tanning bed or self-tanner in the area
- Photosensitive conditions or use of photosensitizing medications
- Darker skin tones need careful assessment due to higher PIH risk
- Active infection, open wounds or a tendency to scar
- Retinoids (topical or oral) are usually paused pre-treatment
- History of skin cancer requires individualized physician clearance
Following treatment, limit sun exposure and use broad-spectrum SPD daily to protect results.
IPL to Treat Acne, Rosacea & Sun Damage
IPL energy is absorbed by the skin’s melanin (brown pigment) and hemoglobin (in blood vessels) which helps lighten pigmented spots and reduce visible redness. IPL can also dampen inflammatory pathways and, with acne-specific filters, can target porphyrins produced by acne bacteria.
For Acne
The anti-inflammatory effects of IPL directly target bacteria associated with blackheads, whiteheads and other clogged pores. Sebum production also slows, resulting in fewer breakouts and improvement of post-acne marks over time.
For Rosacea and General Redness
Rosacea-related redness, flushing and visible blood vessels can improve as IPL selectively heats vessel targets, leading to a reduction in diffuse redness and telangiectasias. Calming inflammation can also reduce the frequency and intensity of flushing episodes.
For Sun Damage
Years of UV exposure can lead to dark spots, uneven skin tone and fine lines. IPL helps reduce these effects by fragmenting excess pigment and stimulating a more even complexion. As sun spots lift, the skin often looks brighter and smoother.
Recovery and Results
IPL is often called a “lunchtime” treatment because most people can return to daily activities right away. However, your body is still in recovery immediately after. Mild redness and warmth, occasional swelling and pigmented spots may darken before flaking over 7 to 14 days. Bruising is uncommon but can occur with vascular targeting. There is also risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially for patients with darker skin tones.
For the first 24 – 48 hours:
- Apply a cold compress as needed
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen
- Avoid heat, intense exercise, exfoliants and picking at darkened spots
- Makeup is often fine after 24 hours if the skin is calm
Most patients undergo three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, then periodic maintenance based on goals and sun exposure.
After a series of treatments, you may notice the following improvements:
- Acne-Prone Skin: Fewer breakouts and a reduction in post-acne marks
- Redness & Rosacea: Minimized redness and fewer visible blood vessels
- Pigmentation: Lightened brown spots and more even skin tone
