1. What Is Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA-approved medication to treat the double chin. It is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
2. How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella is comprised of deoxycholic acid. It is the same material that is found in a person’s gallbladder. We inject it into the area of treatment, it ruptures the fat cells and the body sends in little cells to remove that ruptured fat. Over time, the double chin lifts and goes away.
3. How Many Kybella Treatments Will I Need?
Typically, patients need between one to three treatments. We treat the patient, let them recover and see what improvement they have. The more fat someone has under the chin, the more treatments they typically require. We usually space the treatments about 4 to 8 weeks apart.
4. What Can I Expect At My Kybella Treatment?
Typically what we do is we clean the skin, then we mark the area of treatment, put some ice on the skin to numb the area a little bit and we inject the medication. Within 15 minutes, the fat cells are ruptured. During that time, the patient may experience a little bit of burning or discomfort, usually very manageable with just an application of ice, and then the patient may feel a little bit of swelling or some numbing in the skin. I always tell patients, ‘Embrace the swelling!’ That means the Kybella is working, your body is getting rid of that fat, and that you’re going to get a better result than if you had no swelling.
5. Are The Results of Kybella Treatments Immediate?
No. Immediately post-treatment you will have swelling and you need to recover from that swelling. The body has to absrob the fat we have now released into the body from the fat cells. Typically, people see their results at about 8 weeks, but the body continues to improve the area, lifting and tightening the skin for up to 6 months after treatment with Kybella.
